Fernando Reyes, Head of Chemistry at MEDINA, is one of the Spanish representatives in the European Commission-funded COST Action Ocean4Biotech – European transdisciplinary networking platform for marine biotechnology (CA-18238)- and co-author of a new review article on the essentials of marine biotechnology. It synthesizes the essence, opportunities, responsibilities, and challenges encountered in marine biotechnology and outlines the attainment and valorization of directly derived or bio-inspired products from marine organisms in sectors such as energy, food and feed, agronomy, bioremediation and climate change, cosmeceuticals, bio-inspired materials, healthcare, and well-being. The article has been published as a result of the COST collaboration and focuses the study on the European state of affairs.
